Hiking with the dog in the Gorges du Chassezac

I had found an idea for where to walk the dog: follow a part of the Gorges (canyon) of Chassezac. The Gorges du Chassezac are part of the Vivarais Cévenol, which extends from the garrigues ardéchoises to the buttresses of Mount Lozère, in France. They are less famous than the gorges of the Ardeche and yet very appreciated by the initiated.

The Chassezac gorges form a remarkable landscape consisting of granitic rock outcrops and the river. Located between Cévennes to the south and Margeride to the north, the gorges of Chassezac offer a wide variety of landscapes. With a canyon more than 7 km and a vertical drop of 400 m in the Belvedere Guerin Guard, the Chassezac is characterized by its rugged relief which gave the gorge long the name of the Devil’s den.

We park the car near the village “Pied de Borne”, on the small road that follows the gorges of Chassezac. It was morning and it was not very hot in the shade. Which made us the only walker.

We followed one of the many hiking trails (marked trails) which gave us the opportunity to discover an exceptional panorama, nature having here, retained all its wild beauty and its mystery. Starting from Pied de Borne, located at the intersection of three magnificent rivers: the Altier, the Borne and the Chassezac, we enjoyed the variety of relief, steep and rocky on the mountain slopes.

This trail draws its interest from the wild character of the spaces traversed and its low frequentation. We were able to appreciate the calm of the gorges and the beauty of the places in all tranquility.

Several climbing sites are located in the narrowest part of these gorges. They offer a total of more than 60 equipped lanes, 20-100 m, 4c-7a. The equipment is recent and reliable but some major routes sometimes require a few jambers or “friends” in addition. The setting is extremely wild and deserves a visit alone.
