Photograph taken during a walk on one of the slopes of Mount Lozere. A thermometer was hanging outside a chalet, showed – 16 degrees celcius (3.2 Fahrenheit). I met no one this day, on a large part of the way.

Popular hiking destinations attract crowds during the summer, but not during the winter months. “The conditions eliminate the crowd,” says Anderw Skurka, author of The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide. The parks or open spaces that once swarmed with the families or children of the college in times of crisis suddenly offer a place for reflection.
