Rikugien Gardens is one of the most known daimyo teien (garden of feudal lord). Built by Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa who was the favorite retainer of the fifth Tokugawa Shogun Tsunayoshi, during the Edo period. This Tsukiyama-Sensui style stroll garden has been designated as a national scenic beauty spot since 1953. Rikugien is often considered Tokyo’s most beautiful Japanese landscape garden alongside Koishikawa Korakuen. The name Rikugi-en means Garden of the Six Principles of Poetry which comes from the idea of the six elements in waka poetry while en means garden or park.
