The Plum Blossom Festival indicates Japanese spring is just around the corner. Before the cherry trees will do their shade, it is before the plum blossoms that swooned Japanese. A old hanami that some still practice.
The ephemeral aspect of cherry and a belief that gods inhabit these trees were leaving plum, apricot otherwise known as Japan, to center stage. Imported from China during the eighth century, it is said that the plum away evil. Thus, we used to plant them near doors or Kimon demons by which the evil spirits were supposed to go. Such as cherry, plum come in many varieties cultivated for centuries. Their colors range from white to dark pink.
